The hidden cost of every preview render
Time, focus, and the animation that almost was.
The hidden cost of every preview render
The cost isn't the render time. The render time is what you planned for. The cost is everything around it:
- The lost flow. You wait, you context-switch, you come back 5 minutes later and have to re-remember where you were in the animation.
- The lost iteration. That small change to the timing you wanted to test? You didn't test it, because the render cost was too high. You shipped the version that was good enough.
- The lost shot. The experiment that would've made the animation better — the alternate camera, the B-roll cut, the B-spline easings — stayed in your head because the render-time cost was prohibitive.
Every iteration you skip is an animation that almost was. Every lockup is 5 minutes you can't get back. Over a project, the wall is real, and it's not the render — it's everything the lockup costs you around the render.
Blitz Preview Render moves the render to a separate process. The lockup is gone. The iteration loop is back. The trade-off is quality (you pick the trade-off per render), not the time you spend staring at the screen.
Watch it work
13 seconds. One render. The UI stays live.
Watch it work
The clip at the top of this section is the addon rendering a preview animation in a separate process. The Blender UI is live throughout. The cursor keeps moving. The timeline scrubs. The artist can keep working while the render finishes.
What you're seeing:
- Step 1 (left half of the clip): the artist kicks off a preview render with the default settings — the kind of render that would normally lock the UI for the duration.
- Step 2 (right half of the clip): the addon takes over, spawns a child process for the render, and the Blender UI stays responsive. The artist can scrub the timeline, adjust a keyframe, switch to a different camera — all while the render runs.
- The orange overlay is the addon's preview-quality preset; you can trade speed for quality with a slider.
This is a 13-second clip. A full-quality render of the same animation would take the same wall-clock time as the addon, but the addon lets you do other things during those 13 seconds. Over a project, the cumulative savings are the whole point.
How to install
- Download the addon from the Studio B4 project page.
- In Blender: Edit → Preferences → Add-ons → Install… and select the downloaded
.zip. - Enable the addon. The Render → Blitz Preview Render menu appears.
- Set your quality-vs-speed slider and hit render. The UI stays live.
Free. Open. No catch.
The whole thing, in one sentence.
Free. Open. No catch.
Blitz Preview Render is a free Blender addon, made by Studio B4, distributed via the official project page. No paywall, no trial, no email-gate, no upsell. The 13-second clip above is the whole product. If it saves you the lockup, install it.
If you want to support the studio: see the project page for the contact path. There's no required tip jar; the addon is the work, and the work is free.
What you get
- The full addon, with the quality-vs-speed slider and the multithreaded preview renderer.
- The Studio B4 support path if something breaks on a new Blender release.
- Updates when new Blender versions ship.
What you don't get
- A cloud render farm (this is a local-process addon; that's the trade-off).
- A real-time preview (this is a preview-quality render, not a viewport proxy).
- A subscription (no subscription, no trial, no paywall).
If a paid render farm or a real-time preview is what you need, there are other addons for that. This one solves the lockup, and it solves it for free.

Did the 13-second clip convince you the lockup is actually gone, or did it just show the addon running?
